The Brain Gut Connection

Have you ever noticed how digestive issues can absolutely leave you feeling drained and even in a cranky mood? Babies can be especially sensitive because they are so tiny, but we even experience this as adults!

Maybe you’ve even seen how stress and emotions can affect your digestion by making you nauseous, causing your stomach to hurt, maybe indigestion, or even making you go too much or not enough? Or maybe you’ve even experienced making a decision because you had a “gut feeling”.

Did you know that your gut is referred to as your second brain? Yep, it’s true because your brain & your digestive system work very closely together!

This happens through your autonomic nervous system.

You have probably heard that probiotics, less stress, drinking more water, or not eating foods that your body is typically sensitive to will help your digestion - while this is true, one important piece of the puzzle is missing here…And, that’s making sure that connection between your brain and your gut is operating at its best!

When your nervous system AKA the connection between the brain and gut is STRESSED, two things happen that can hijack your tummy:

#1 The area in your mid back and low back that send nerves to your tummy can be holding a pattern of stress! The stress in your spine and nerves can cause the signals going to your stomach to be overactive or under-active. This interferes in the communication to your organs leading to dysfunction and GI symptoms.

#2 Once your body is holding this kind of stress in your spine and nervous system, it can actually put your body into a state of FIGHT or FLIGHT.

Being in this mode puts your body in a state of survival and protection mode, which turns OFF your digestion, shunting blood flow away from your organs, so that you can be on high alert for any danger. We can get locked into this primitive reaction from emotional, chemical, or physical stress.

But, guess what?!

This cycle can be broken and normal digestion can be restored NATURALLY!

Chiropractic care is one of the absolute best tools you are most likely missing from your tool box for digestive issues!

Through chiropractic, we can make sure that your actual brain is communicating with your second brain (YOUR GUT) to the best of its ability!

Chiropractic essentially helps ensure that your body is not chronically operating in fight or flight mode, and that it can access that REST + DIGEST mode.

Because your gut is considered your “second brain”, it is very intertwined with many different parts of your wellness!

When your body is stuck  in stress mode, it does not function like it is supposed to. You can see changes in digestion, mood, immune function, and  a whole host of other issues.

Chiropractic adjustments help take your body out of fight or flight mode, and back into rest & digest mode so your body can do it’s thang, and do it right!
